Sudan’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna, Magdy Ahmed Mufaddal, called for strengthening international cooperation to address the world drug problem.
In his statement to the meetings of the sixty-seventh session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, which is currently being held in Vienna, the Sudanese Ambassador stressed the need to increase technical assistance to developing countries to confront this problem.
Mufaddal explained that LDCs lack adequate financial support, training, capacity-building, and technology transfer, with a view to strengthening the capacities of national institutions in this regard.
The diplomatic official stressed the importance of prevention, awareness, community participation, and the provision of treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration services in society, as part of efforts to address the global drug problem.
The ambassador spoke about the negative repercussions of the war in Sudan and its impact on the country’s efforts to address the global drug problem, referring to the exceptional circumstances in which Sudanese institutions specialized in combating drugs work.
Ambassador Mufaddal called on the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to assist his country in building its national capacities and rebuilding the institutions devastated by the war related to drug issues.
The meetings of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs at its sixty-seventh session began on 14 March and will continue until 22 March 2024.
