The speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, urged Italian companies to return to work in Libya and contribute to reconstruction and development projects.
Saleh’s remarks came during a meeting with the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alperini, and the Italian Consul in Benghazi, Francesco Luigi, where they discussed strengthening bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Libyan scene.
Saleh stressed the importance of forming a unified government to achieve electoral entitlement and end the political crisis in the country.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abdullah Belhaq, said that Aguila Saleh stressed the importance of resuming infrastructure projects, such as the coastal road project, and called for the restart of direct flights between Benghazi and Italian cities, and the operation of shipping lines to enhance trade cooperation between the two countries.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives also called on the Italian authorities to facilitate visa procedures for Libyan citizens, with a particular focus on students and patients in need of treatment in Italy.
Italy has been Libya’s top trading partner since the sixties of the twentieth century, but diplomatic relations between the two countries have been tense due to Italy’s colonial past in Libya between 1911 and 1943.
