The Instagram platform was able to reunite two Indian brothers after an 18-year separation and demonstrated the ability of social media to change individuals’ lives and restore family ties.
The city of Kanpur, India, witnessed the events of this meeting when Rajkumari, a resident of the village of Hathipur, spotted, via a video on Instagram, a man whose face showed a familiar sign – a broken tooth – which made her believe that he might be her brother Bal Govind, who left the village heading to Mumbai years ago for work. And he didn’t come back.
Bal Govind was accidentally lost in the city of Jaipur after a period of work in Mumbai, where he suffered from a mental illness that led to his memory loss and his inability to return to his family.
During that period, he found a job, got married, and began posting snapshots of his daily life on Instagram. After seeing the video, Rajkumari contacted him through the platform and began to slowly introduce herself, as he did not remember her at first.
Over time, and with repeated conversations, some of his memories began to return, allowing them to confirm their identity as brothers.
They were able to arrange a meeting in June 2024, where they met and hugged each other after many years of separation.
