The Tulsa, Oklahoma, Fire Department has released a video showing an unexpected incident where a dog started a fire in his owner’s home.

The video shows two dogs and a cat inside the living room, where one of the dogs chewed on a lithium-ion battery, causing the battery to explode and ignite the house.

Firefighters later extinguished the fire, and all the pets were able to escape through the dog door without injury.

Andy Little, public information officer for the Tulsa Fire Department, noted that the incident could have been more catastrophic had there not been an exit for the pets or had the family been asleep during the fire.

Little urged the importance of following manufacturers’ guidelines when using lithium-ion batteries, using only approved chargers and storing the batteries out of the reach of children and pets.

The National Fire Protection Agency stressed that users should stop charging their devices when the battery is fully charged to reduce the potential risks that batteries may cause.
