Brazilian legend Ronaldo has announced the sale of his stake in Cruzeiro, Brazil’s most prominent club, two years after taking over the club that was struggling in the second division.

During a press conference in Belo Horizonte, Ronaldo said he had accomplished the job by returning the club to its natural position and handing it over to a new leadership.

The conference was attended by billionaire Pedro Lourenço, who runs supermarket chain Super mercados B.H. and took ownership of the club.

Although details of the deal have not been disclosed, local media reports have suggested that Lourenço, like his predecessor Ronaldo, will own 90% of the club’s shares for an estimated 600 million riyals (about 110 million euros).

Despite the criticism Ronaldo faced last year for disappointing results, with Cruzeiro finishing fourteenth, he stressed that the club was “in intensive care” when he took charge and that he is now “resting comfortably in hospital”.

Ronaldo expressed confidence that Lourenço will lead Cruzeiro to become a great club in Brazil, while Lourenço admitted the task is difficult but ready for it.

The club, which is based in Belo Horizonte and has won four Brazilian leagues and two Copa Libertadores, was suffering from financial and administrative crises that led to relegation to the second division in 2019.

Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, known as “Ronaldo”, is a Brazilian footballer born in Rio de Janeiro, on September 22, 1976, and is considered one of the best strikers in the history of football, and has achieved many sporting achievements.

Ronaldo was nicknamed “The Phenomenon” as he played for Barcelona from 1996 to 1997, with Inter Milan from 1997 to 2002, with Real Madrid in 2002 and with AC Milan in 2007-2008.
